Origins of Dalmatia

Dalmatia. The name might sound familiar from reading your favorite tourism magazine, or you may only know the reference thanks to the popular spotted dog. What you probably don’t know, however, is the extensive history of Croatia’s most recognized region – but not to worry, we’re here to educate you. Welcome to Dalmatia 101.

For starters, Dalmatia stretches from the town of Zadar in the north to the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’ – Dubrovnik in the south. Dalmatia boasts mountains and islands, and a handful of UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The history of Dalmatia dates back to the 1st century BC thanks to the Illyrian tribe called the Dalmatae. Since then, Dalmatia has seen Roman rule, Byzantine laws, and Slavic tribes. Dalmatia existed as the Republic of Venice and was a province of the Austrian Empire known as the Kingdom of Dalmatia. Oh, and we must not forget the Napoleonic era!

After World War I, Dalmatia was divided by the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and the Kingdom of Italy – and after World War II, it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, Dalmatia became one of the four historical regions of Croatia – and today, it is Croatia’s shining star of tourism, boasting a glittering coastline, architecture rooted in its long history, vibrant cultural heritage, and timeless traditions the locals will savor for all generations to come.
